The Romanian creative group 'Art perspective youth association' will organize the following activities for Book in 1 day:

Common Work of Art. On a big white material (cotton or something) we will paint with color sprays (graffiti like) various images that every person associates with culture. Using different colors, making different drawings: one of the ways to express yourself and to represent who you are;
Book of Identities. We will invite all people walking through the park to make a collage of press-cuttings (words or even single letters) on a A3 size paper. Here they should represent their culture. Another artistic means of representing one’s world, one’s culture and values. They can either stick only a few words from the newspapers or they can use pictures and sentences to make a page of their identity. In the end we will gather all these A3 sized papers. We will tie them into a big book, which we will call The book of Identities. After the project is finished this book will be displayed in a school and maybe in public space as well;
Make your kite, make a wish. With simple materials at hand children, youngsters and adults will be invited to create their own kites and then let them into the sky. On each kite the person who created it will write down either a wish, a dream or a thought;
Drawings contest. A contest of drawings made by children from several schools of Bucharest on the topic ‘My freedom of speech’. These drawings will be displayed during the 3rd of May in the area of the park where we will organize our activities.
Musical bands. From time to time, there will be a band playing traditional songs. They will sing for the public and will teach them some songs and traditional dances.

The creative group MYSTYle art will organize the following activities for Book in 1 day:

Street performances. With support from other youth organizations we are planning flash-mobs and three street actions related to freedom of mass media;
Blog/podcast/vlog workshop. As ‘blogging’ has become very popular here lately, we will organize workshops with experts. They can explain young activists the do’s and don’ts of making publicity on the internet;
Concert. Some music form alternative Latvian bands;
Visual material. We will ask people to send in visual material about the topic of the 3rd of May. This will be published in an alternative Latvian Internet portal. During the event and afterwards the material will be exhibited;
Science Café. Discussion between experts, journalists and public about internet art and other uses of new media.

All these events (except street actions) are planned in the center of alternative artists society - Andrejsala, "Dirty Deal Cafe", Riga.

Loesje Germany will have activities for Book in 1 day on different days and in different places.
Photographer Varvara has made an photo reportage in a Turkish center. Her photos are the unspoken answer to the question how this Turkish center is constructive as well as deconstructive for Turkish men to integrate in German society.

On 29th of April Loesje Berlin will go to Gorlitzer Park with a Comic Artist. He will draw silhouettes of people in the park and they will be invited to write their thoughts in the text bubble. There will also be an artist that will lead paper-maché workshops. She will engage people in making 'monster presidents'. Life size sculptures of figures that rule our countries.

On the 3rd of May Loesje Berlin will go to the Brandenburger Tor where two rows of stones still symbolize the wall that fell in 1989. They will ask people if they consider themselves 'East' or 'West' and then invite them to write a thought on that particular side of the wall with crayon.

Loesje Estonia will do creative writing workshops. Considering the theme of Book in 1 day, they will include the theme of the Latvian – Estonian border, because this is a Schengen visa area. They will make an exhibition of Loesje posters that were the result of the creative text writing workshops;
They will also be present at de Student days in Tartu to engage a lot of young people in Book in 1 day activities.
Next to that they will print empty newspaper pages and hang them in cafés. People will be invited to write their own news on the pages.

The Armenia group will get one big black Mercedes, covered from outside and inside with Loesje posters and other fun stuff. They will do this to break the stereotype that the black Mercedes is something that can never change into something better. The posters and stickers will be made beforehand during different workshops (creative text writing and silent brainstorming). The creative text writing workshops are planned to be diverse, with many new elements (such as nice herbal tea with honey served during it, to encourage healthy lifestyle, and to offer an alternative to poisons like Coca Cola and stuff like that). Armenia will also experiment with different art-theatrical performances.

The exhibition was opened by Rene van der Linden, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. He hold a speech telling the importance of freedom of speech and making a connection with the work Loesje is doing as well as other people that use public space for freedom of expression.

“Diversity as Freedom of Expression”

On the 3rd May 2007, on the occasion of the World Freedom Day celebrated in the entire world by means of creative tools, Art Perspective youth association organizes the project “Diversity as Freedom of Expression”.

The aim of the project is to promote the concepts „diversity„ and „freedom of expression” among young generations, but also to build a framework for developing their artistic skills and creativity.

This project is carried out in two stages:

1st Stage – Organization of an artistic workshop in cooperation with School no. 1 from Dragomiresti village, near Bucharest, by involving children aged 13 - 15 in creative activities by means of which they will be able to express their view on the world they live and things that occur around them. This will be done by drawings, collages and creative text writing, based on two main activities:

- an open discussion about „freedom of expression”, a concept perceived through children’ eyes in order to realistically assess the impact this concept has on future generations.

- a word game based on Loesje creative text writing method – an exercise of imagination and freedom of expression using words from the domain of newspapers and media.

As a result of these two activities exemplifying the written and oral way of expressing freedom, the project will end with a display of children’ imagination by means of creating a unique collage with different art materials at hand.

2nd Stage: - On the same day, at 19.00 in Club A from Bucharest is organized the second part of the project where youngsters will make use of their photographical and musical abilities by participating to the following activities:

a) Photography Exhibition – to reflect the project idea of freedom of expression;

b) Musical shows performed by bands and individual singers as a way of strengthening the concept of diversity by musical elements (guests: ACUM – folk; IOD – rock; Kata – hip-hop; Bianca – R&B; Roxana – pop music).

In addition to the activities mentioned above, at the entrance in Club A there will be posted big blank posters on which everyone is invited to leave a graphic message (a drawing or a text) in order to exemplify the freedom of speech and share any other interesting ideas with their fellow youngsters.

Loesje "TICKLE THE POWER"
An exhibition about humor, creativity and free speech on the streets.
Jakarta, Indonesia between 27 April 2007 - 2 June 2007

It is 1983 and suddenly posters with oneliners appear on the streets of the Dutch city of Arnhem, signed by a Dutch girl's name "Loesje". The texts reflect on different current cultural and social topics in society and dare to ask critical questions. At the same time they are positive and make people laugh. More than 20 years later the posters with texts signed by Loesje have appeared in over forty countries. Loesje has become a phenomenon in the Netherlands and steals the hearts of more and more people outside her country of birth.

Who is this mysterious girl Loesje, what does she want and why does she leave her mark on the streets? During the exhibition "tickle the power" you will find out and you can even create oneliners yourself during one of the creative text writing workshops.

This part will contain ideas for workshops and is especially for people that want to join the project but need some extra inspiration.

Here are three writing examples. If you have examples yourself please mail them so that we can publish it on the website.

Examples of writing exercises

Here are some short writing exercises that you could use during your workshop on the 3rd of May. You can change and adjust the exercises to your class and program.

1. One poem made together

Time: 15 min.
Aim: to together write one poem (perhaps about freedom of speech). This is a good exercise to start with, so the participants can get into the writing and set their creativity free.

Preparation: white paper sheets and pens

Exercise: The participants should sit in a circle around a table. Not more than fifteen participants around one table are recommendable. Everyone gets one paper. You tell them to make up a title of a poem and write it on top of the page. You could suggest a theme, like freedom of speech, or leave it open. Then they should fold the paper under what they wrote and pass in on to the person on their right. This person writes the first line of the poem (without knowing the title) and folds her/his paper again. On the visible part of the paper the same person writes the last word that she/he has written and passes it on to her/his neighbor on the right. The next person should write a short line that rimes with this word and afterwards fold the paper. Then you repeat the last steps until you think the poem is long enough (around 8 lines). Finish the exercise with letting the participants read the poems out loud.

2. Reaction on an article
Time: 55 min. (10 min. explanation time; 10 min. to choose an article; 5 min. to read the article; 20 min. to write; 10 min. to read out loud)

Aim: To form and express your own opinion about current news in connection to freedom of speech. These readers' letters can then be sent into the newspaper.

Preparation: Collect interesting articles from newspapers about the topic and copy them.

Exercise: Everyone can choose one article that they like or that provokes them. Then they will write a readers letter/letter to the press to react on the article.

They could use the following approaches:

Formal What do they think about this article; let them explain their opinion with arguments.

Creative If the article is about a problem, how would they solve it?

Personal Why did they choose this article, do they recognize the matter, how does this connect to their own lives?

Topic How important is freedom of speech and why? What happens if we don't have this right any more and how can we get this freedom everywhere?
How and when do you use freedom of speech? How far may you go with this right (linking to freedom of press)? What is the border between freedom of speech and insulting other people? (Here the Danish Mohammed cartoons can be used as aexample). How can you use your freedom of speech or other creative ways to spread your ideas?

3. Use your freedom of speech
Time: 30 min.

Aim: to write their own article

Preparation: white paper sheets and pens. Choose a warming-up and prepare this.

Exercise: Tell the participants they have the opportunity that their article could be published in a book about freedom of speech, so now they should use their freedom of speech. It's not about what freedom of speech is, but that they get the possibility to use it. They can write about anything they want to share. Maybe things they hate, like or things they never get the chance to talk about. You also can encourage them to make a drawing, cartoon or what they want; they have the chance to use their freedom of expression. To make it easier to start you can use an article, cartoon, movie, discussion, game or mind map as a warming-up about the topic. Or you can ask them to describe their ideal society.
